I want to begin my column by singling out the members of the Holy Redeemer Altar Society for their very successful Valentine’s Tea Party held on February 8. I had never been to a tea party before and wasn’t sure what to expect. Most people, when they think of a tea party, imagine a group of high society women socializing in an English country manor. To my delight, the large hall where the tea party took place was filled almost to capacity, and everything was so beautifully arranged. Some of the women wore special hats for the occasion.
It was an amazing cross-section of parishioners of all ages. A number of Hispanic parishioners present told me how much they enjoyed it, given that tea parties are not a tradition in Latin America. A number of grandparents invited their grandchildren to attend. There were also a good number of men present, contrary to the stereotype people have of tea parties. In short, it was simply a wonderful afternoon of being together as a parish family and making new friends. I suspect that this may become an annual tradition.
In other news, our annual Holy Redeemer School Auction is only a few weeks away. It will take place on Saturday, March 7, at the Red Lion Hotel on the River in Jantzen Beach. I attended last year’s event and it certainly surpassed my expectations. Everyone seemed so enthused and happy to be a part of it. This is our chief fundraiser for our school and a large portion of the money raised goes towards tuition assistance. The Auction Committee has been working very hard the past few months to organize it and to find sponsors. I hope that you will consider attending this important event for Holy Redeemer School, now celebrating its 112th year.
Finally, I wanted to inform the parish about a change in Mass time on national holidays. Usually we shift the Mass time to 9:00am on such days. Our practice now will be to celebrate Mass at the usual time of 7:15am on national holidays, with the exception of the 4th of July and Thanksgiving Day. Our experience shows that more people seem able to attend Mass at 7:15am than 9:00am. on those days.
May God continue to bless our parish family as we seek to live out our faith in Jesus Christ on a daily basis!
Yours in Christ, Fr. Pat
