Many people know little about Blessed Fr. Basile Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Before he became our founder, he was a seminary professor of philosophy and theology in the Diocese of Le Mans, France. He was fully aware, in the wake of the French Revolution, that most parishes were in dire need of clergy and that most Catholic schools were in disarray.
In 1837, he formed the Congregation of Holy Cross, bringing together a group of teaching Brothers entrusted to him by Fr. Jacque Dujarie, their founder, and a group of auxiliary priests he recruited to assist in revitalizing parishes of the Diocese. By all accounts, Fr. Moreau was a superb teacher and preacher, and he once wrote an insightful treatise entitled simply, “Christian Education.”
Given that the beginning of our school year begins on Wednesday, I felt that I would share one particularly poignant quote—originally directed to Holy Cross religious who were teachers—that gets to the heart of our mission at Holy Redeemer School:
This is what you can and should do for your students, if you really are zealous for their salvation. Hurry then; take up this work of resurrection, never forgetting that the special end of your institute is, before all, to sanctify youth. It is by this that you will contribute to preparing the world for better times than ours; for these students who now attend your school are the parents of the future, the parents of future generations, each one of whom bears within them a family. Influence them, then, by all the means of instruction and sanctification that have just been explained. Then, and only then, can you hope to attain the end of your vocation by the renewal of the Christian faith and piety. May it be so! May it be so!
It is both inspiring and daunting to realize the sacred duty entrusted to our Principal, our teachers, and to us Holy Cross priests. Our call is to sanctify the youth at our school! They are already the parents of the future and each one bears a family within. The only way to revitalize our Christian faith and our society is through them.
I think that everyone associated with Holy Redeemer School is aware that it is a holy work and it leaves a lasting mark on young minds and hearts.
May Blessed Basile Moreau intercede for our school, that we can truly live out our stated mission: “Inspired by our faith, Holy Redeemer is a diverse community committed to academic excellence, prayer, and service.”
Yours in Christ,
