I had to laugh as I got some reaction to my column a few Sundays ago, when I bid farewell to a number of people who have worked in our school and parish. Some people thought that I was leaving, too! I can assure you that I have not received a new assignment and am quite content to stay at Holy Redeemer for as long as my Provincial desires.
There is another person I must recognize for services rendered, but at least she is not leaving the parish. Liz Cole, who has been our bookkeeper for both Holy Redeemer Parish and School, has replaced Amy Potthast as the Administrator for the Holy Cross community at the University of Portland. Liz has been an exceptional bookkeeper—efficient, knowledgeable, attentive—as well as a faith-filled, committed, and joyful colleague. We wish her well in her new position serving Holy Cross on the Bluff.
As of June 24, I will be heading home to Indiana for my annual vacation. I intend to let my mother spoil me, having the advantage of being the oldest, the only son, and living the furthest away from home. Increasingly my father dotes on me, too. I will even stop by the U.S. Senior Open which Notre Dame is hosting while I am there. I hope to get a few swing tips from the pros if given the opportunity.
I will then be in Rome for the General Chapter of the Congregation of Holy Cross from July 4-17. A General Chapter is the highest governing body of our Congregation and is comprised of all the religious superiors and elected delegates of the Congregation from across the globe where Holy Cross serves (North and South America, West and East Africa, India and Bangladesh, Haiti, and France). It is entrusted with discerning about and passing legislation on key matters that shape our mission as Holy Cross: vocation recruitment, the formation of our younger members, internal governance and structures, community life, and finance. Despite our full schedule, there will be at least one free day to visit the Vatican, visit other popular sites, and enjoy some good Italian fare at one of Rome’s many fine dining establishments. And we are blessed that just around the corner from where we are staying is a nice place to get gelato!
You will be in good hands with Fr. Chris at the helm in my absence. And please extend a warm Holy Redeemer welcome to Fr. Mike Belinsky when he arrives in early July. Finally, please pray for the Congregation of Holy Cross as we gather for our General Chapter, that it can bear much fruit for our service to the Church and the world.
Yours in Christ,
