It was Shakespeare who said, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” In my life in Holy Cross, one constant has been saying goodbye to people I have come to know and love in the many places where I have lived and served. But as I am led to a new place, I am blessed to meet many new people and to make new friends, as I have at Holy Redeemer.
What I realize, however, is that just as I have gotten to know some amazing people, I have to say goodbye to them. Some of the pillars of our parish have passed away since my arrival. And now we must say goodbye to Anna Raineri, Amy Potthast, Doug Geier, and Leah Nusse, who have done so much for both our parish and school.
Anna Raineri is the quintessential Catholic school Principal, with an air of authority, yet approachable, warm, and wise. Her leadership has allowed Holy Redeemer School to flourish and to enjoy a solid reputation as one of the best grade schools in the Archdiocese. And the fact that she came out of retirement to serve a second time should never be forgotten. She will always be a Holy Redeemer hero!
Amy Potthast , a woman of faith, tenderness, and generosity of spirit, should be recognized just for laughing at the jokes of Fr. Chris and myself while preaching when no one else thought they were funny. She has chaired our Earthquake Committee, has been behind the resurgence of young people joining Cub Scout Pack 417, and has been a superb Administrator for the Holy Cross community at the University of Portland. Doug Geier, who loving husband, graciously agreed to serve on the Parish Pastoral Council. His calm presence, wise counsel, and skills as the Secretary will be missed. Herman and Allan will be greatly missed by their classmates at school. Portland’s loss is Indiana’s gain!
We must also bid farewell to Leah Nusse, her husband John, and their sons, Joey and Hank. Leah always communicates a quiet, joyful calm, that quickly puts others at ease. She is diligent, hard-working, and creative. How to thank her for the countless hours in her office advancing the work of Development for Holy Redeemer School? I hope that whatever parish and school they join in Montana realize the gift that we are giving them in the Nusse family!
When you can, please thank them and wish them well. We can offer to carry them in our hearts and to remember them in our prayers, that this next chapter of their lives be filled with many graces and blessings. They have surely been great blessings to us at Holy Redeemer!
Yours in Christ,
